Certain areas in Kyrgyzstan require special permits for entry due to their border locations and specific security considerations.
Being in these zones without a permit can result in fines or other administrative consequences. When planning your trip, make sure to check current requirements and prepare the necessary documents to avoid any issues during your journey.
Four zones that require permission:
- Issyk-Kul region: Karkyra, Sary-Jaz, Engilchek, Khan-Tengri national park, Sarychat-Ertash reserve, Ak-Shyrak and Karasay checkpoint
- Naryn region: Ak Say valley, Kol-Suu lake, Kok-Kiya canyon, Chatyr-Kul lake and Torugart checkpoint
- Osh region: Trans-Alaï range (Lenin peak)
- Chuy region: Chong-Kemin valley
What is a Border Permit?
Certain areas near Kyrgyzstan’s borders are subject to strict regulations, especially for foreign nationals. If you wish to visit these zones, you must obtain a border permit ahead of time.
The restricted zones are as follows:
- Issyk-Kul region: Karkyra, Sary-Jaz, Engilchek, Khan-Tengri national park, Sarychat-Ertash reserve, Ak-Shyrak and Karasay checkpoint
- Naryn region: Ak Say valley, Kol-Suu lake, Kok-Kiya canyon, Chatyr-Kul lake and Torugart checkpoint
- Osh region: Trans-Alaï range (Lenin peak)
- Chuy region: Chong-Kemin valley
How Soon Should I Apply for a Border Permit?
It typically takes 10 working days to process a border permit, while an expedited option allows issuance in 5 working days. If you need it urgently, expedited processing is available and takes 6 working days. Remember that weekends and public holidays are not counted, as administrative offices are closed on these days. You can check public holiday dates here. Applications can also be submitted up to two months before your intended entry date.
How to Decide on an Entry Date?
Not sure of your exact entry date? No problem. Your permit will be valid for two months starting from the date you choose, allowing you to enter the restricted area at any time during this period.
Payment Details
Payment is made in euros via bank transfer after finalizing the necessary details.
Where Do I Get My Border Permit?
Once your border permit is processed, you’ll receive a confirmation email. The address where you can collect the permit will be sent to you in an email once the authorization is ready.
What do you need to know?
Keep the original document and make several copies, as you’ll need to submit a copy at every military checkpoint. Don’t forget to bring your passport for identification purposes.

The border permit is valid for two months from the entry date.

Do You Need a Border Permit to Cross Kyrgyzstan’s Borders?
This border permit allows you to access restricted areas near the borders of China, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan. However, it does not permit crossing international borders.
- If you’re crossing the Kyzyl Art border post between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan without visiting restricted zone 4, no permit is required
- To cross the Torugart checkpoint between Kyrgyzstan and China, a border permit is mandatory
